우리는 페미니즘이 필요하다

 

  I support feminism. The feminist movement is necessary in our society. Men have been stronger than women, so man has always dominated the world. So women were usually neglected in every area. In particular, there are women’s stories in history, but mainly writings about man. So we cannot know much about woman in history. Therefore we need feminism to help us do our best to study the female.

  나는 페미니즘을 지지한다. 페미니즘 운동은 우리 사회에 꼭 필요하다. 남성은 여성보다 강해왔고, 남성은 항상 세상을 지배해 왔다. 그래서 여성은 모든 영역에서 방치되곤 했다. 특히 역사 속에는, 여성의 이야기가 있어도 주로 남성에 대한 서술 뿐이다. 따라서 우리는 역사 속에서 여성에 대해 딱히 알 수가 없다. 그러므로 우리에겐 여성에 대해 알기 위한 노력을 돕는 페미니즘이 필요하다.

  We should regard both males and females as human beings. Though there are so many physical and mental differences between them, neither is better or worse. Both are equally important. Until now, man was regarded as more important so the woman was subject to isolation and restraint. Feminism aims to remove these aspects so the both human beings will be able to coexist.

  우리는 남성과 여성 둘 다를 같은 "인간"으로 보아야 한다. 그 사이에 신체적·정신적 차이가 있긴 하지만, 어느 것도 더 좋거나 더 나쁘지 않다. 둘 다 동등하게 중요하다. 지금까지, 남성이 더 중요하다고 여겨졌고 여성은 소외되고 통제되는 대상이었다. 페미니즘은 이런 점들을 없애고 두 인간이 공존할 수 있는 것을 목표로 한다.

  Feminism is not thinking that only woman is important claiming women are superior to men. Feminism is just trying to get back woman’s rights and to understand the female because no one has tried to understand women in old days. We have to understand not only men but also women and then we can understand human beings and society. This world needs coexistence.

  페미니즘은 오직 여성이 중요하다고 생각하고 여성이 남성보다 우월하다고 주장하는 것이 아니다. 페미니즘은 단지 여성의 권리를 되찾고 여성에 대해 이해하려 노력하는 것이다. 과거에는 아무도 여성을 이해하려 들지 않았기 때문이다. 우리는 남성 뿐만 아니라 여성에 대해 알아야 하고, 그래야 인간과 사회를 이해할 수 있게 된다. 이 세상에는 공존이 필요하다.

  Feminist do not believe that women deserve special privileges. Feminist are not who hate or look down men. Anyone can be a feminist if he or she has a desire for political, economic and social equality and thinks all humans, male and female should have equal rights. However, today there is a negative preconception in our society. Media often broadcasts sensational reports to easily draw people’s response. It twists some feminist’s perception of feminism. So many people think being feminist is weird and they reject feminism. It caused anti-feminist campaigns and even some women are against feminism. They claim we don’t need feminism anymore.

  페미니스트는 여성이 "특권"을 가져야 한다고 생각하지 않는다. 페미니스트는 남성을 싫어하고 무시하는 사람이 아니다. 정치적, 경제적 그리고 사회적 평등에 대한 열망을 가졌다면, 모든 인간, 즉 남성과 여성이 동등한 권리를 가져야 한다고 생각한다면, 누구나 페미니스트가 될 수 있다. 그러나 요즘 사회에는 페미니즘에 대한 부정적인 선입견이 자리잡고 있다. 매체들은 종종 대중의 관심을 끌기 위해 자극적이고 선정적인 보도를 내보낸다. 그들은 페미니스트들의 페미니즘 사상을 왜곡한다. 그래서 대중들은 페미니스트가 되는 것이 이상하다고 생각하고, 페미니즘을 거부한다. 이는 anti-feminism까지 일으켰고 여성들마저 페미니즘에 반대하게 되었다. 그들은 우리에겐 더이상 페미니즘이 필요하지 않다고 주장한다. 

   But we still need feminism because the patriarchal system still exists. For example, in many countries, if a couple get married, the bride will take the groom’s last name. Moreover the children also take their father’s last name. And we need feminism because there are some gaps of pay and employment rate though we have equal employment opportunities. In addition there are still many inequalities in many areas.

  하지만 가부장적 시스템이 여전히 잔재하기 때문에 우리는 여전히 페미니즘이 필요하다.  예를 들어, 많은 나라에서 연인이 결혼하면 신부가 신랑의 성을 쓰게 된다. 게다가 자식들도 아버지의 성을 따른다. 그리고 능력이 같아도 임금과 고용률에 차이가 있기 때문에 우리는 페미니즘이 필요하다. 이외에도 많은 영역에 아직도 불평등이 만연하다.

   Feminism does not view women as weak and is not trying to make women stronger. They know they already have much ability, so they just want society to acknowledge their sufficiently strong power. They desire every person to be treated based on their individual capabilities, not because of gender, but in spite of it. Because the society has not seen women’s capabilities, we needed feminism, and we still need feminism.  

  페미니즘은 여성을 약한 존재로 보지 않으며 여성을 강하게 만들려 하지 않는다. 그들은 여성이 이미 충분한 능력을 갖고 있음을 알고 있다. 그들은 단지 사회가 여성의 충분히 강한 힘을 인정해주기를 바랄 뿐이다. 그들은 모든 인간이 성별이 아니라 개인의 역량에 따라 대우받기를 바란다. 사회가 여성의 힘을 알아주지 않아 왔기 때문에, 우리는 페미니즘이 필요했고, 여전히 필요하다.
